British Standards

British Standards offers a wide range of standards relevant to metals including steel. They range from guidelines on testing to technical delivery conditions. 300 Series

The 300 series consist of austenitic chromium-nickel alloys. Austenitic contains a maximum of 0.15% carbon and a minimum of 16% chromium, and nickel is the important alloying element. This creates superior corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication. The 300 series is used in applications that require corrosion resistance whereas the 400 series is applied in applications that require high wear and tear resistance. However, the 300 series is most used because most of the applications consider corrosion resistance over the wear and tear capacities.

400 Series

The 400-series is a group of stainless steels that contain 11-27% chromium, up to about 1% carbon, and 2.5% nickel maximum. The grades of stainless steel castings respond to heat treatment and can be supplied with a predominantly martensitic microstructure in a wide range of strength and hardness. The 300 and 400 series have comparable tensile strength and yield strength. 300 Series grades are highly ductile. On the contrary, the 400 series grade has higher carbon content and tends to have more hardness than the 300 series. Overall the grade 400 series metals are stronger.

PH Grades

Stainless steel is an example of a common alloy used in the fabrication of many products. To further strengthen the stainless steel, they are subjected to heat treatments which result in the precipitation hardening stainless steel material. One of the most used types of PH stainless steel is 17-4 PH stainless steel. PH stainless steels (precipitation-hardening) contain around 17% chromium and 4% nickel. These steels can develop very high strength through additions of aluminium, titanium, niobium, vanadium, and/or nitrogen, which form coherent intermetallic precipitates during a heat treatment process referred to as heat ageing.

Alloy Steel

Steels fall broadly into four categories: carbon, stainless, tool and alloys. Technically speaking every steel is an alloy, as it is created by combining iron with carbon, however, to be officially designated as an “alloy steel” it must contain one or more other elements in addition to these two. Common alloyants include manganese (the most common one), nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, silicon, and boron. Less common alloyants include aluminium, cobalt, copper, cerium, niobium, titanium, tungsten, tin, zinc, lead, and zirconium. The reason for creating alloy steels is to improve the metal’s mechanical or physical properties, such as strength, workability or corrosion resistance. Steels are usually divided into the two main categories of high alloy and low alloy. Low-alloy steels are the ones which have up to 8% alloying elements whereas high-alloy steels have more than 8% alloying elements. There are around 20 alloying elements that can be added to carbon steel to produce various grades of alloy steel. Alloy steel is most commonly used to manufacture pipes, especially pipes for energy-related applications. It's also used in the manufacturing of heating elements in appliances like toasters, silverware, pots and pans, and corrosion-resistant containers.
